If you’ve heard the term “search engine optimisation” being thrown around but have not yet taken steps towards giving it a go, you may need a little persuading in regards to its worth.

SEO essentially gets your website higher up the rankings on search engine results pages (SERPs). There are many reasons why you should look into SEO – the first being that according to a survey by Conductor earlier this year, 64% of website traffic comes from organic searches. So what is SEO good for, you ask?

SEO is good for… Conversions

Because… Increasing sales or leads is the most obvious reason to do SEO and it’s everyone’s aim for their website. The higher up you are on the SERPs, the more likely you are to be found by potential customers, and so the more likely people are to click through to your site and make a purchase.

If your page titles and meta descriptions are well-written and include important keywords, the traffic you do get will also be more relevant and therefore more likely to convert.

SEO is good for… Costs

Because…Unlike PPC, your SEO costs will be the same whether one person or a thousand people visit your site. SEO provides a good ROI, and it truly is an investment – while other marketing methods such as PPC provide a high return more quickly, SEO can work just as hard for you with lower expenditure.

SEO is good for… Market Share

Because… No matter what your business is or who your competitors are, chances are they have some kind of web presence. And if they are savvy, they will be working to get their site to appear first on the search results pages – above yours. You need to be doing the same or you risk losing market share to competitors who are easier to find.

SEO is good for… Trust

Because… Just because a website appears on SERPs, doesn’t mean it can be trusted. But would you trust a website that you couldn’t find on Google at all? Being at the top of search engines goes a long way toward increasing your credibility – searchers will think you are at the top of the page because you are the best at what you do. They’re far more likely to trust you than someone who doesn’t even appear on the first page of search results.

SEO is good for… Branding

Because… By optimising your page titles, URLs and meta descriptions – which all appear on SERPs – you are doing several things: telling users what to expect on your page, letting them know your website is relevant to their search, and reinforcing your brand.

Who are you and what do you want to say about your product or service? Appearing in search results means more eyes on you, so your brand becomes more recognisable. Make the most of it.
