An effective SEO strategy and lead generation are among the most important factors in helping to grow your business. Lead generation involves attracting potential customers and turning them into qualified and loyal customers. In order to generate leads, an effective strategy needs to be put in place.

Although lead generation and SEO are different, when you bring these two powerful strategies together, you can drive massive growth for your business.

In this blog post, we look at SEO lead-generation tips you can use to grow your business.

Lead Generation Keywords

Lead generation keywords come in all shapes and sizes; such as long-tail, short-tail, plural or singular. There are plenty of SEO keyword research tools, such as MOZ and SEMrush that can help to help you discover new keywords. There are three things to consider when conducting keyword research, which includes:

  • Relevance to your products or services

  • Competitive landscape (what is the keyword difficulty and will it be difficult to rank for your proposed keywords)

  • Keyword structure (based on your target audience and their search intent and buying journey stage - it is important to capture your audience at the right time and buying stage)

Some keyword lead generation tips to consider:

Identifying your target customer through buyer personas

A buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer based on market research and data about your existing customers. When creating your buyer personas, it is important to consider customer demographics, buying behaviour patterns and motivations.

Buyer personas make it easier to tailor and create content to the specific needs and behaviours of your customers. The type of content you create can be attributed to your customer's behaviour and how they interact with your website and content.

Optimise your keyword ideas

Keyword optimisation can improve your SEO and the chances of getting your content among the top search results. Optimising a relevant list of keywords with quality content can earn you more traffic, leads and customers. To help with your keyword planning, it is important to implement the following keyword optimising tips for your content strategy, these include:

  • Audit your current on-page SEO

  • Find keywords for your website

  • Map your keywords

  • Add keywords to your website

  • Avoid keyword stuffing

  • Aim your keywords at your target audience

Research your competitors

Whilst it is vital to focus on your content strategy and keywords, it is important to see what keywords your competitors are using. There are plenty of tools at your disposal that you can use to conduct keyword research, MOZ and SEMrush are my favourite tools to use.

Conducting competitor keyword research is a great way to see what is working for them and then you can improve it for your own site. There may be gaps in your content which your competitors are filling, but you are not. It is important to always monitor your competitors and try to stay one step ahead.

Incorporate your keywords

Your keyword list has been finalised - now what? It’s time to incorporate your keywords into your website. However, it is important to not just add keywords into existing content or onto random landing pages, there needs to be structure and the correct placement for your keywords to rank higher on search results pages.

There are main areas of your online store where you should place your target keywords, and these are:

  • Title tag

  • Site URL

  • H1 Tag

  • Link text

  • Body Content

  • Image tag

  • Meta description tags

Measure your keyword's success

After all your work researching and implementing your keywords, you want to make sure all your hard work has paid off. You can check whether your keywords have and are leading to more traffic through Google Search Console and Google Analytics. If you haven’t set up either, follow these steps:

  • Set up Google Search Console with your online store, if you don’t already have one. You can set up Search Console here

  • Link Search Console to your Google Analytics account. Here are the instructions from Google for linking both.

  • Review your keyword performance in Google Analytics under Reporting › Acquisition › Search Console › Queries.

Revise, Revisit, Rinse and Repeat

SEO is a slow burner and may take months if not years to climb rankings for your proposed keywords. It is important to remember that SEO is an ongoing process that needs to be monitored and constantly updated to improve your rankings. An effective SEO strategy should be in place to help grow your business for the short and long term.

Revisiting and changing or including new keywords is important. Trends, new technology and new competition are all factors that will be changing and forcing you to adapt and change your strategy to adhere to the ever-changing SEO landscape. Ensure you have the fundamental basics in place and follow these steps to keep on top of your SEO strategy and help your business grow and generate the leads necessary in order to thrive.
