5 Ways to Make Mondays Better
19th October 2015
I think it's fair to say no one is a massive fan of Mondays, no surprises there.
As an avid lover of a lie-in, I can confirm that my Monday mornings are met with a begrudging sense of familiarity. And what’s worse – they happen every week. Once I’m settled at my desk with a strong cup of tea, these feelings of despair evaporate quite rapidly – read my ‘creating a fun working environment’ blog to see where I’m coming from. But I know Mondays are the least favourite day of the week – often the busiest too, with 4 more days to go, and the memories of the weekend begin to fade as soon as that first email is opened.
So, how do we make it better?
Write a list
On Friday afternoon, when I’m caught up, content, and looking forward to a glass of wine and no doubt a bunch of flowers at home, I write a list. This contains everything I need to do for the following week. So come Monday morning I’m met with a prioritised list of tasks to get on with straight away. This way I know my Monday morning haze won’t allow me to forget important tasks, and I can ensure I’m fully prepared for any upcoming client calls for that week.
Get the kettle on
We Brits love a routine, and we love a hot cup of tea. But there’s more to this than what meets the eye, and it comes down to a routine. Our brains are programmed to be able to link certain processes together. Think of it like this: a song that brings back a memory, or a smell for that matter. Or how about the advice that you should do your revision at the kitchen table, and not in your bed, as you won’t be able to sleep otherwise i.e. your brain will associate your bed with work, and so your bed ceases to be a relaxing environment. So back to the office- that first cup of tea sets your brain into ‘work mode’, and gets the week off to a flying start.
It’s okay to talk about the weekend
Yes, work is work, and keeping your personal life separate from your professional life is something I would advise, of course. But, considering your colleagues are the people you spend the majority of your waking hours with, it’s okay to ask what they got up to over the weekend. Reminiscing about the past few days allows you to get it out of your system, so you can settle yourself down sooner rather than later.
Music
Here at SilverDisc, we love our headphones, and bouncing music around between us is common practice. Losing yourself in the 80s, or perhaps a silent rave at some house can really lift your spirits. Personal experience has taught me that the faster the beat, the faster I type. So if you’re walking past and can hear the bass on my headphones pulsing, you know I’m lost in the moment – best come back later when my document is finished. Mondays for me mean the louder the better!
A cheat meal
We’re surrounded by diets and clean meals, especially with a Pizza Hut down the road, so we try to eat healthily to keep the calories down. But on Mondays, maybe you can let this rule slip. If you’re a little sleep deprived, a pick ‘n’ mix or a bacon butty can really help! Reward yourself for getting out of bed this morning and turning up clean, smart and ready to go. It’s tough being grown up sometimes!
Here at SilverDisc, I can assure you we are awake and present from 8.30 am on a Monday morning, through until 5.30 pm on a Friday afternoon. And hopefully, with these 5 tips, you will be too. If you have questions about digital marketing, then get in touch today.
